UncategorizedIran Bus drivers demanding 10% pay hike strike in the capital

Tehran (The Times Groupe)- Drivers on two major bus lines in Tehran went on strike Monday for a 10% wage increase, causing hours of delays in public transportation in the Iranian capital.

Mehr news agency reported that Mayor Ali Reza Zakani appeared with the drivers and promised to resolve their issues.

A strike on two major north-south routes disrupted traffic in many bus stations in the city, according to the Sharq daily. Bus passengers reportedly resorted to the subway, causing overcrowding at some stations. There are dozens of bus lines in Tehran.

Video circulating on social media showed striking drivers calling for the mayor’s resignation and a 10% wage increase.

Hundreds of police buses and drivers transferred people free of charge, according to the semiofficial ISNA news agency.

Major junctions in Tehran were under tight security on Monday morning.

A driver syndicate member was arrested last week. During the past few months, teachers have also held protest rallies demanding higher wages.
