Tehran (The Times Groupe)- Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on Sunday one of its members has been assassinated in the capital Tehran by gunmen on two motorcycles, reports state news agency IRNA.
“The enemy of the revolution assassinated the Colonel Hassan Sayyad Khodayari. Khodayari was a member of the Quds Force (which is responsible for the IRGC’s foreign operations) who served in Syria in the past years,” according to the state-run media.
He was described as a “defender of the sanctuary”, a term for anyone who works on behalf of the Islamic republic in Syria or Iraq.
According to IRNA, Khodayari was killed by five bullets as he returned home at about 4:00pm (11:30 GMT).
Pictures, published by Iranian media, show Khodayari slumped over in the driver’s seat of a car, with blood around the collar of his blue shirt and on his upper right arm.
The IRGC published a statement on their website denouncing a “terrorist act” committed by “elements linked to global arrogance”.
The Guards said they launched an investigation to identify the “aggressor or aggressors”.
Separately, Iranian state TV announced earlier that IRGC agents had found and arrested members of an Israeli intelligence network.
