WorldKim Jong Un observes missile test to boost nuclear capabilities

Seoul (Times Of Ocean)- North Korean leader Kim Jong Un witnessed a new type of tactical guided weapon test-firing to enhance his country’s nuke capabilities on Sunday, North Korean state media reported.

South Korean and U.S. officials are concerned North Korea could soon resume nuclear testing after Kim broke a self-imposed moratorium on intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) testing last month.

The South Korean military said it had detected two projectiles launched from the North’s east coast towards the sea on Saturday. The projectiles flew about 110 kilometers (70 miles), with an apogee of 25 kilometers and a maximum speed less than Mach 4, which indicates they were short-range missiles.

KCNA did not provide any details on the launch but linked it to the North’s nuclear goals.

“The new-type tactical guided weapon system is of great significance in drastically improving the firepower of the frontline long-range artillery units and enhancing the efficiency of tactical nukes operation,” KCNA said.

It said Kim “gave important instructions on further building up the country’s defense capabilities and nuclear combat forces.”

Analysts say North Korea has been developing short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) that can evade missile defenses and strike targets in the South.

On April 5, Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, warned South Korea that if attacked, her country would use nuclear weapons. The warning is seen as an implication aimed at the incoming conservative president of South Korea, Yoon Suk-yeol.

Bae Hyun-jin, a spokesperson for Yoon, said there was nothing new or surprising in the North’s “show of force” as a new administration takes over.

According to his office, Moon Jae-in, who will leave office on May 10, has been briefed in real-time on the North’s missile launch.
